Athena SWAN Lecture

2016-11-18-global-health-presOn Friday 18th November, the School hosted Professor Moira Whyte, OBE, MBBS, FMedSci, FRCP, Sir John Crofton Professor of Respiratory Medicine, Head of Medical School, Director of the MRC/UoE Centre for Inflammation Research, University of Edinburgh to give their inaugural Athena SWAN lecture.  The lecture entitled ‘Life, Death, and a Career in Academic Medicine’ was well attended by both staff and students.

Moira Whyte is Sir John Crofton, Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Edinburgh and Head of the Medical School at that institution.  Her research interest is in the field of inflammation biology of lung disease and she is Director of the MRC/University of Edinburgh, Centre for Inflammation Research.  She undertook her undergraduate medical training at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London and much of her postgraduate training at Hammersmith Hospital.  She was a Wellcome Trust Advanced Training Fellow before becoming Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Sheffield in 1995.  She has a particular interest in the training of clinical academics and Chairs the MRC Training Panel.  She was recently Registrar at the Academy of Medical Sciences.  She was awarded an OBE in 2013.
