Dr Beatrice Mwagomba, MD, presented her PhD research work at a 19th Annual International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM) conference in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from 25th to 30th October 2017.  Beatrice is a 3rd year PhD student under the joint Program for Global Health Implementation between St Andrews and College of Medicine, Malawi.

ISAM 2017 was a wonderful cultural and scientific exchange through the theme of “New frontiers” whereby recent scientific discoveries in the field of addiction were highlighted.  The scientific presentations addressed global and local Middle East issues in the area of addiction including behavioural addictions.

Under primary supervision of Prof. Alexander Baldacchino, Beatrice presented part of findings from her PhD project on a poster titled “Adaptation and Validation of Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) in Malawi”.  This presentation describes how the locally brewed alcoholic drinks were incorporated to make the AUDIT a user friendly screening tool to primary health workers in Malawi, a resource constrained country located in Sub-Saharan Africa.
